They can be both beautifully and powerfully fragrant, eliciting profound emotional responses. Yet the use of essential oils goes well beyond their fragrant appeal. Used throughout history for their medicinal and therapeutic benefits, essential oils can be used as natural alternatives in holistic self-care practices. Their unique chemistry allows them to be used aromatically and applied topically to the skin, while other essential oils can be used as dietary aids to promote vitality and well being.[/vc_toggle][vc_toggle title=”Why dōTERRA Oils?” el_id=”1467279756155-d2a64428-b738″]doTERRA® (meaning “Gift of the Earth”) essential oils represent the safest, purest essential oils available in the world today. The testing process include gas chromatography, mass spectrometry, FTIR Scan (Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy), microbial testing, and organoleptic testing. The CPTG quality protocol requires the use of independent laboratories for standardization and testing.

The sense of smell is a tool that can elicit powerful physiologic, mental, and emotional responses. Essential oils are quickly absorbed by the smell receptors, which have a direct link to the limbic system by way of the olfactory nerve. The limbic system is part of the brain that supports a variety of functions including smell, emotions, behavior, and memory. For this reason, essential oils have an especially powerful effect via aromatic application. Some essential oils induce uplifting or invigorating effects, while others are more calming. Diffusion is one of the simplest methods for using essential oils aromatically. Diffusers that use cold air or water are ideal. However, using essential oils aromatically does not require any special diffusing devices. You can achieve the same health benefits by simply placing a few drops of essential oil in the palm of your hand that is then cupped around the nose as you breathe deeply.

Topical application is a very effective method for applying essential oils. Because essential oils have low molecular weights and are lipid soluble, they easily penetrate the skin. Once absorbed, they stay in the applied area for a localized benefit. Although essential oils are readily absorbed, there are many ways to increase absorption. Using a light massage will increase the blood flow to the area of application, in turn improving distribution throughout the body. Use of a carrier oil can also increase absorption, especially in skin that is dry or flaky as it helps moisturize the skin and slow evaporation of the oil. To decrease the likelihood of developing a skin sensitivity, especially on young or sensitive skin, it is advisable to use a carrier oil (such as Fractionated Coconut Oil) to dilute more potent oils and when trying an oil for the first time. The recommend dilution ratio is typically one drop of essential oil to three drops of carrier oil. It’s always advisable to use several small doses throughout the day rather than a single large dose. Start with the lowest possible dose (1–2 drops). A topical dose can be repeated every 4–6 hours as needed. Because every individual is unique, the dose will vary for each individual based on size, age, and overall health status.

Certain essential oils have a rich culinary history and can be used as dietary supplements supporting a variety of healthy conditions. When you sprinkle cinnamon on your oatmeal, sip a mug of peppermint tea, or add fresh basil leaves to your spaghetti, you are actually consuming some volatile aromatic essential oil compounds. Essential oil contributes many health benefits as well as flavoring and aroma properties to foods. When in their concentrated form, essential oils can be used as dietary supplements for more targeted and potent health benefits. Internal use is a very safe and effective method of application because of the sophisticated physiologic processes of our bodies. When ingested, essential oils directly enter the blood stream via the gastrointestinal tract, where they are transported throughout the rest of the body. Essential oils are lipid soluble so they are readily transported to all organs of the body, including the brain. Then, like all things we consume, essential oils are metabolized by the liver and other organs and are then excreted. The composition of essential oils is highly complex. Each constituent possesses a unique set of biochemical properties that react with cells and organs in different ways. Although these mechanisms of action are not completely understood, the positive end results have been demonstrated. However, the body is only equipped to handle appropriate doses of essential oils. Proper dosing according to labeling recommendations and other professional guidelines should be strictly followed to avoid toxicity.[/vc_toggle][vc_toggle title=”Are Essential Oils SAFE while Pregnant and Breastfeeding?”]Okay so this is a personal decision. Some women will choose not to use any oils during pregnancy. Some may choose to use nearly every oil there is. Let a mother use her natural intuition when it comes to essential oils and advise as follows. It is important that your obgyn/midwife or physician is aware of and approves your use of essential oils if you are in any way a high risk pregnancy. Since the skin is much more sensitive during pregnancy, it is important to be mindful to always dilute your essential oils well before application.

There are some oils that are best to AVOID DURING PREGNANCY, even diluted! These are clary sage, myrrh, and any blends containing these oils. These oils can promote uterine contractions and are best saved for use during actual labor, when delivery is intended. Using essential oils at this beautiful time can be a natural and gentle way to balance mood, help immunity and reduce anxiety.[/vc_toggle][vc_toggle title=”Will I have support and be able to get help learning?”]You bet your arse you will! Also we have sensitive skin inside our mouths that can be easily irritated by undiluted oils so be super careful with eyes, ears and mouth![/vc_toggle][vc_toggle title=”Shit… you got oils in your eyes?” el_id=”1467279857414-0255ff28-7b37″]This is a scary one but don’t panic too much! Easier said than done I know! NEVER ADD WATER into your eyes if you have messed up and put oil in your peepers! ONLY use a gentle carrier oil to dilute the essential oil back out of your eyes. Expect your vision to be blurry for a while because of the carrier oil (olive oil, coconut oil, avocado oil, jojoba oil, etc.) but please don’t stress… it will go back to normal soon enough! I have done this and I am fine![/vc_toggle][vc_toggle title=”Can you add oils to a bath?”]No better way to use them right?! Everyone loves an warm soak in a relaxing Lavender and magnesium bath… or my personal fav is a Balance bath!!! Never add an oil that is hot, or irritating to the skin in your bath water. Always apply your oils to some kind of carrier before adding to your running waterAs i mentioned I love using: magnesium salts (epsom salt), coconut oil and about 4 drops of you favourite essential oil.[/vc_toggle][vc_toggle title=”Can you go out in the sun?”]Photosensitive oils can react with sunlight when applied to the skin and then exposed to direct UV rays. Make sure to always dilute these oils well, apply them to an area that is not exposed to the sun, or wait 24 hours before spending any amount of time soaking up its warmth! These oils include: lemon, grapefruit, bergamot,  wild orange, lime, tangerine, citrus bliss, litsea, cumin, and any blends containing these.[/vc_toggle][vc_toggle title=”Which oils can cause sensitivity or be a skin irritant?”]-cinnamon bark

-clove bud

Always dilute these oils. Never apply directly to skin of a sensitive or fair skinned person. Do a patch test on the inside of the arm if you are typically a person whom is allergic or irritated by certain products. Please DO NOT apply these oil to babies. If used in a blend such as OnGuard, dilute to a very safe ratio of 1 drop to 10ml. This will ensure safety.[/vc_toggle][vc_toggle title=”Carrier Oils… What are they?”]What exactly is a carrier oil? It is any form of vegetable oil that helps to “carry” our essential oil onto and into our skin. Naturally the best one is doTERRA’s fractionated coconut oil, but you can also use avocado oil, jojoba oil, almond oil, cold pressed coconut oil, and many more. Benefits of using a carrier oil are:

-increases surface area of application (imagine rubbing 1 drop of essential oil all over a sore back!)

-decreases your risk for sensitivity to the pure oils

-you avoid wasting so much of that precious essential oil

-gives you a beautiful base in which to create your own blends[/vc_toggle][/vc_column][vc_column][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text][/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image=”2019″ img_size=”large” alignment=”center”][/vc_column][/vc_row]
